Pre-Move To analysis
Check a Move or Copy before it runs
Checks exactly what you have picked for a Move or Copy, where each item would land, before anything moves. Paths are worked out the way the run itself works them out, including the stop a Move makes in the destination library's __temp folder on the way.
What it tells you
- Which items would be over the 400-character path limit where they land, or on the way through __temp.
- Which names SharePoint refuses, which files are empty, very large or checked out.
- Which folders hold more than 5,000 items directly.
How it runs
- Open Move / Copy. From this tile, or from Migration tools. Sign in and choose Move or Copy.
- Pick both sides. Tick what to move on the left and pick an existing library or folder on the right.
- Press Analyse. Next to Plan and Run. Nothing is moved and no run map is written.
How it works
It works within one tenant: if the destination is in another tenant, nothing is read and the report says why. It is not offered when the Move or Copy is driven by a CSV map. It finds the destination library first, then reads each picked folder and each picked library in full, then builds the same plan the run would build, including where each item lands.
Paths are measured where each item would land and, where the run would pass an item through the destination library's __temp folder, at that stop too, which adds to the path length. Both are judged against the 400 character limit. The name, size, checked out and 5,000 items per folder checks are the same ones Pre-migration analysis uses; the unused library and same landing path checks are not run here.
A file you pick on its own takes its size from the picker and carries no checked out information, so checked out files are only found inside picked folders or libraries. A folder that cannot be read goes on the Skipped sheet and the rest continue; if the destination cannot be found, the run ends with that one row. The workbook goes into History, and the completion dialog offers to start the Move or Copy.
What you need
- Read access to what is picked, and to the destination library.
What it will not do
- It reads and reports. Nothing is moved, and no run map is written.
- The destination must already exist. A library that Run would create cannot be analysed before it exists.
- Source and destination must be in the same tenant. Across tenants nothing is read, and the Skipped sheet says why.
- Analyse is not available when the run uses a CSV map.
- The workbook has the same sheets as Pre-migration analysis.
