No Azure subscription? How to fix it
When Configure Blob Storage cannot find a subscription to use
Archive keeps archived file contents in an Azure storage account in your own subscription. Step 2 lists the subscriptions the account you signed in with can see, and found none it can use. Never used Azure? Steps 1 to 4 create a subscription. Already have one that is not listed? Steps 5 to 8. You can select and copy any of this text, and the links open in your browser. When you are done, press Back to return to Configure tenant exactly where you left it, then press Read my Azure.
Reads only. Nothing in SharePoint is changed.

What it tells you
- Microsoft 365 and Azure are separate. A Microsoft 365 tenant does not come with an Azure subscription - that is a separate sign-up with its own billing.
- Microsoft 365 admin roles give no access to Azure. A Global Administrator sees no subscription until they are given an Azure role on it, or turn on the setting in step 6 below.
- A subscription belongs to one directory. One that belongs to another tenant does not appear here, even if the same person can see it in the Azure portal.
- A subscription that is disabled, expired or past due cannot hold new storage. When that is the cause, the message names the subscription and its state.
- Nothing has been created yet, so there is nothing to undo.
How to fix it
- Never used Azure? Sign in to the Azure portal. Go to https://portal.azure.com and sign in with the SAME account you use in ShareMaster for this tenant. That matters: the subscription is created in the directory of the account that creates it, and the person who creates it becomes its Owner.
- Open Subscriptions and press + Add. Type Subscriptions in the search box at the top of the portal and open it. With no subscription it says none were found. Press + Add.
- Choose Pay-As-You-Go and sign up. Choose Pay-As-You-Go, or a free trial if one is offered. Microsoft asks for your name and address, a phone number to verify you, and a payment card. The card check is not a purchase: you pay only for what you use, which for Archive is mainly the storage it holds. Accept the agreement and press Sign up.
- Wait a few minutes, then come back. The subscription appears under Subscriptions, usually named Pay-As-You-Go or Azure subscription 1. You created it, so you are its Owner and nothing else is needed. Press Back, then press Read my Azure.
- Have a subscription that is not listed? Check it and its directory. Open https://portal.azure.com > Subscriptions. If it shows as Disabled or Past due, re-enable it there. If it is not there at all, open Settings (the gear at the top) > Directories + subscriptions and switch directory: it must be in the same directory as this SharePoint tenant. One in another directory cannot be used from here.
- Global Administrator who cannot see it: give yourself access. Go to https://entra.microsoft.com, open Microsoft Entra ID > Overview > Properties, set 'Access management for Azure resources' to Yes and Save. Sign out of https://portal.azure.com and back in: every subscription in the directory is now visible to you, and you can grant roles on it.
- Give the account a role on the subscription. In https://portal.azure.com open the subscription > Access control (IAM) > Add > Add role assignment. Choose Contributor and add the account that runs Configure tenant: Contributor can create the resource group and the storage account, Reader cannot. If you used step 6, set 'Access management for Azure resources' back to No afterwards.
- Come back and press Read my Azure. Press Back to return to Configure tenant. Nothing is cached - it reads Azure again and the subscription appears in the list. A new role can take a few minutes to apply.
What you need
- Steps 1 to 4: the authority to pay for an Azure subscription, and a payment card.
- Step 6: a Global Administrator in this directory.
- Step 7: someone who is Owner or User Access Administrator on the subscription - or the Global Administrator after step 6.
What it will not do
- Prefer to set up storage yourself? Create a storage account in the Azure portal, then choose 'Use a storage account I already have' in step 2. ShareMaster checks it and lists anything that differs from how it would have built it. The account still has to be in a subscription this account can see, so the steps above still apply.
- ShareMaster never pays for a subscription or sees a payment card. It creates one only when you press 'Create a subscription for me' - offered only when your organisation already has Azure billing it can use (an Enterprise or Microsoft Customer Agreement) - and asks you first.
