Page Inspector

See and fix a modern page

One modern page laid out as SharePoint stores it: each section with its layout and background, each column at its real width, and each web part and text block in order, the vertical section included. Select a web part to see its settings, copy it, and paste it into a column on this page or any other. Change the page's layout, and check the page's translations against what News and search see. The same canvas and translations views are the Web parts and Multilingual tabs on a page in Tenant Explorer.

Makes changes. Pasting a web part, changing the layout and repairing or creating translations change the page. Each asks first, saves a copy of the page as it was before a paste, and is checked by reading the page back. The page is never left checked out by ShareMaster.

What it does

  • Which sections, columns and web parts a page has, and how wide each column is.
  • A web part's settings exactly as SharePoint stores them, and who it is shown to.
  • Copies a web part or text block to another page, on this site or another.
  • Changes a page between Article, Home and Single web part app page layouts.
  • Whether a page's translations agree across the page list, the page's own column and search, and repairs the column when they do not.
  • Creates translations of a page in the languages the site has turned on.

How it runs

  1. Sign in. One tenant, asked when you click the tile. Any of the three credentials works here.
  2. Choose a site and a page. The shared site picker, or paste a URL. Then search the site's pages by title or file name and click Inspect.
  3. Read the canvas. Sections top to bottom, then the vertical section. Click a web part to see its settings.
  4. Copy and paste. Copy web part puts it on the clipboard and on Copied web parts. On any page, Paste on a column, choose where in the column, read the preview, then confirm.
  5. Layout and translations. Choose a layout and Change layout, or Repair translation languages and Create translations on the Translations card.

How it works

Inspect reads the page from its own site and lays out the canvas exactly as SharePoint stores it, without rebuilding it. Copy web part puts a copy on Copied web parts, a list kept on this computer between sessions, and changes nothing on the page.

A paste is built and checked before anything is sent: the new canvas must be the old one plus exactly the one web part, with every existing part still there and every setting intact, or nothing is written. The pasted part gets a new id of its own. The page is then read again, and the paste is refused if the page is checked out to someone else or has changed since you opened it. The page's content is saved as a file on this computer first, and if that save fails nothing is written.

The page is then checked out (unless it is already your draft), confirmed to still hold the content the paste was built from, saved, and either checked in as a minor version or, when it was published and you keep the same state, published again. It is read back to confirm the web part is there. If anything fails after ShareMaster checked the page out, that check-out is undone and the message says what state the page was left in. To reverse a paste, use the page's version history in SharePoint or the saved copy of its content.

Change layout is the same write Site Pages Explorer makes. Repair translation languages asks SharePoint to bring the page's translations column into line with its translation pages, then checks again; it counts as repaired only when the page list and the column agree, and search lagging behind is reported rather than counted as a failure. Create translations asks SharePoint for a translation page in each chosen language, then confirms each one now exists.

What you need

  • Edit permission on the page's Site Pages library to paste, change layout or create translations; Read to inspect. No tenant-level role and no admin consent: everything runs on SharePoint's own APIs.

What it will not do

  • One page at a time.
  • A pasted web part that shows a list, a library or items from another site is pasted as it is and warned about: it shows nothing on the new site until you choose a list there.
  • Pages checked out to someone else are not changed. A page checked out to you gets the web part in your draft and stays checked out, so you can publish it when ready.
  • The rarer layouts (news link, search results, Topic, Spaces) are shown but never written: they change what SharePoint thinks the page is, not how it looks.
  • Search catches up with a translation repair after its next crawl, so it may disagree for a while.
  • Saving a page over a signed-in token or the app certificate has not yet been proven on a live tenant; the result is always read back, so a refusal is reported, never counted as done.
