ShareGate alternative: what ShareMaster does, and what it costs

Most people who land here are pricing up a SharePoint migration and want to know whether there is something smaller and cheaper that still does the job. Sometimes there is. Sometimes there is not, and this page tries to be straight with you about which case you are in.

On ShareGate: it is a good product and we are not going to pretend otherwise. We also will not print their prices or their feature list here. Their pricing is theirs to change, we have no way to keep a copied figure accurate, and a stale number would mislead you. Get current numbers from ShareGate directly and compare them against ours below, which are published in full and are the only ones we can guarantee.

What ShareMaster costs

Every price is USD per seat and excludes tax. Subscriptions run for one or two years; the two-year term is discounted against two consecutive one-year terms. Fees are non-refundable, which is why the trial exists.

Tier 1 year 2 years What it adds
Community Free Free SharePoint explorer, Report Master, reset list item and file versions, bulk content-type updates. Free for life, not a trial.
Recycle Master $300 $400 Everything in Community, plus recycle bin search and bulk restore, Space Master and Replace Master.
Clone Master $900 $1,300 Everything in Recycle Master, plus the full migration engine, tenant-to-tenant copy, content types and site columns, permissions replication.

Full pricing and what is in each tier.

What the migration engine actually does

You pick a source site and a destination site as two separate sign-ins, then choose how much of it to copy. Because the two connections are independent, the source and destination can be in different tenants.

Mode How it moves the data When you would pick it
Copy structure and content Microsoft's Migration API, staged through Azure The default for a real migration. Best throughput on large libraries.
Copy content only Item by item The destination already exists and you just want the data in it.
Copy structure only Creates lists, fields and content types Standing up a destination to review before any content lands.
Move To / Copy To SharePoint's own copy-job endpoint Shuffling folders inside or between sites without a full migration.

Within a run you can work at whichever level you need: whole tenant, individual sites, lists and libraries, items, files, site columns, list columns, content types, permission levels, SharePoint groups, and views. Source users can be mapped onto destination users, which is the part that matters when the tenants have different identities.

Where ShareGate is the better call

We would rather you read this than buy the wrong thing and ask for a refund we do not give. Look elsewhere, ShareGate included, if any of the following describe you.

  • You need a vendor with an enterprise support commitment. ShareMaster is a small operation. If your migration needs a named contact and a response-time guarantee, buy from someone who sells that.
  • You want it to run unattended on a server. ShareMaster is a Windows desktop app. It runs on your machine, while your machine is on.
  • You need migration sources we do not handle. ShareMaster migrates SharePoint to SharePoint. If your source is a file share, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox or Notion, we are not your tool today.
  • You want ongoing governance dashboards and reporting for its own sake. Our reports exist to support a specific job. They are not a management reporting product.
Worth knowing before you trial: on a trial licence you can connect both tenants, browse everything and run reports without restriction. The migration itself runs but deliberately skips items at random, so a trial copy is never a complete one and should not be treated as a real migration. Recycle bin restore is not available on a trial at all. The sensible way to evaluate is to scope the job with reports, which are unrestricted, then buy.

Where ShareMaster tends to win

  • The price is on the page. $300 or $900 a year, no quote, no call, no per-gigabyte maths.
  • It is not only a migration tool. Migration is a project that ends. Recycle bin search, version trimming, storage cleanup and find-and-replace are the jobs that keep coming back, and they are in the cheaper tier.
  • Your content does not pass through us. It moves between your machine and SharePoint. We see licence checks and which features you used, not your files.
  • One-off migrations are not punished. If you need to move a handful of sites once, a $900 one-year subscription is the whole cost.

Frequently asked questions

What does ShareMaster cost?
Three tiers, all in USD and excluding tax. Community is free for life and includes the SharePoint explorer, Report Master, resetting list item and file versions, and bulk content-type updates. Recycle Master is $300 for one year or $400 for two, and adds recycle bin search and bulk restore, Space Master and Replace Master. Clone Master is $900 for one year or $1,300 for two, and adds the full migration engine, tenant-to-tenant copy and permissions replication. There is a 14-day trial on the paid tiers with no credit card required.
Is ShareMaster cheaper than ShareGate?
We publish our prices in full above, so you can compare them against whatever ShareGate quotes you. We deliberately do not print ShareGate's numbers here, because their pricing is theirs to change and a figure we copied months ago would mislead you. Check their pricing page for current numbers.
Do I need a ShareGate licence to use ShareMaster?
No, they are unrelated products from unrelated companies. ShareMaster is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a plugin for ShareGate.
Can ShareMaster migrate between two different tenants?
Yes. You connect a source site and a destination site as separate sign-ins, so they can be in different tenants, and you can map source users onto destination users as part of the run.
Can I try the migration before paying?
Yes, but do not mistake a trial run for the real thing. On a trial licence the migration runs and skips items at random by design, so the result is deliberately incomplete. Recycle bin restore is not available on a trial at all. Reports are unrestricted, so the reliable way to evaluate is to scope the job with reports first.
Is ShareMaster a cloud service?
No. It is a Windows desktop app. Your files and list data move between your machine and SharePoint rather than through our servers. The app does contact sharemaster.io to validate your licence and record which features were used.
