What is the SharePoint Admin Agent?
The SharePoint Admin Agent is Microsoft's AI governance assistant for SharePoint and OneDrive. Admins ask questions in plain English, such as which sites are overshared or which have low activity, and it answers from SharePoint and SharePoint Advanced Management data with recommended next steps. What is the SharePoint Admin Agent?
Microsoft describes it as an AI-powered governance experience for assessing and remediating content risks across SharePoint and OneDrive. It is aimed at administrators, not site owners or end users, and it is separate from Copilot inside SharePoint sites, which helps people create and work with content.
Microsoft frames its job around getting content ready for Copilot and agents: managing content sprawl and the content lifecycle, preventing oversharing in search and AI answers, and controlling who can reach which sites. In practice it is a front door to SAM features many tenants already have but rarely open, such as data access governance reports, the inactive sites and site ownership policies, site access reviews and restricted content discovery.

Each answer comes with analysis, recommendations and suggested follow-up prompts. The fixes themselves run through the SAM policies and reports the agent points you to, so an admin still decides what changes.
What admins should do
If your tenant has even one Copilot licence, you probably already have SAM and can try the agent today: assign the SharePoint Advanced Management Administrator role to the admins who will use it, then start with the oversharing and low-activity prompts. Those two tend to surface the sites that matter most before Copilot rollout.
The agent is good at exploratory questions across a large tenant. For structured, repeatable reporting at library and item level, it complements rather than replaces purpose-built tooling: a prompt can tell you which sites are overshared, but a full cross-site permissions export for an auditor is a different job.
